What is a HIIT treadmill workout and more importantly, how can you use it to burn fat to lose weight? HIIT training has been a hot trend in the fitness world for a while now. For those that are unfamiliar with it, HIIT stands for “High Intensity Interval Training.” One of the reasons that HIIT training is such a hot trend is because it is one of the most effective workouts available to us with hiit treadmill workouts being one of the most popular.
A HIIT workout is a workout in which you exercise at maximum level for short bursts of time, you then rest for a short time. These “interval” workouts are completed over a shorter overall period of time than most workouts (HIIT workouts rarely go beyond 30 minutes). HIIT is a great way to avoid the plateaus that our bodies are known to fall into with other workouts.
Better yet, you may be surprised to learn just how many different ways in which you can get a HIIT workout. While HIIT workouts can be found in many different styles of fitness (spin class, crossfit, etc), you can actually successfully complete a HIIT treadmill workout.
For those that already enjoy a treadmill workout, this is a great workout to fit into your routine. The treadmill is a fantastic tool to have on hand when looking to get the most effective HIIT workout.
If you are looking for a HIIT treadmill workout for beginners, don’t worry! I know it is easy to get overwhelmed with the plethora of websites and videos out there. As a beginner, it is hard to know where to begin, but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
What are the benefits of a HIIT treadmill workout?
A HIIT treadmill workout has a lot of benefits including:
- HIIT treadmill workouts burn more calories in less time, which also translates to more fat burned in a shorter period of time. Additionally, HIIT workouts tend to have a high afterburn effect, meaning that you are still burning calories long after your workout has ended!
- HIIT workouts are a great way to increase your conditioning and endurance.
- Like many other exercises, HIIT training helps improve your overall health profile including your cholesterol levels, your cardiovascular health, and more.
How to find the best HIIT treadmill workout for beginners
When starting your beginner treadmill interval workout, be prepared to do some experimenting to see what works best for you as far as speed, incline and overall time. You may need to start out at a slower pace with less time but don’t worry, after a bit of practice you will be able to increase your speed and the length of your workout exponentially.
In the beginning of every exercise program there is a learning curve, so just like with anything else you can expect your beginner treadmill interval workout to change quite a bit once you start.
A good rule of thumb to finding the best HIIT treadmill workout for beginners is to find the speed and incline that you can do, but can sustain for no longer than 60 seconds.
At the 60 second mark, you should feel as though you can no longer go further at this pace (this is the “high intensity” portion of the workout). Once you reach this point, it is time for your “recovery interval” where you will go easy for 2 minutes (1 minute once you are more conditioned). This completes one cycle.
Once you have completed a cycle, it is time to go back to your high-intensity setting for another 60 seconds, and so on. Make it a goal to complete 6-10 cycles of this for maximum benefit.
Of course, as with any other workout, it is important to warm up for 6-10 minutes before you begin the HIIT cycle and for several minutes after as well.
Is this the best treadmill exercise program for beginners?
While there are many great treadmill exercise programs for beginners available, a HIIT treadmill workout for beginners is one of my favorites and it can be extremely effective.
More important than the workout you decide on though, as a beginner, is the importance of knowing how to operate your treadmill. Be sure and familiarize yourself with all of its functions, and of course, all of the safety features available.
How often should you do a HIIT workout for beginners?
As a beginner, how often should you be doing a HIIT workout on the treadmill? To start with, I suggest doing a HIIT treadmill workout for beginners 1-2 times per week in addition to your other workouts and activities. Since they are relatively short in duration, it is easy to fit a HIIT treadmill workout into your schedule.
