Quick Tip for Thinly Slicing Beef
Be sure to use very thinly sliced steak for this recipe. For best results, place the steak in the freezer for 20 minutes prior to using a really sharp knife slicing. The steak being firmer helps you to cut thinner slices.
Can I Make These Cheesy Steak Wraps in Advance?
You sure can. They are amazing for meal prep! Just make the filling in advance and store it in an airtight container that is microwavable. Then just reheat when you’re ready for them.
When you are looking for a meal on the go, make up the lettuce wraps and then wrap them a layer of parchment paper, then in plastic wrap to keep them together until you’re ready to eat.
Which Lettuce Is Best for Wraps?
If this is your first time making lettuce wraps, look for butter lettuce in the grocery store. It is hands down the best lettuce for wraps. The leaves are strong and rounded which makes it great for holding a good bit of filling. Plus, it has a really mild flavor that you want for a good wrap.
Variations of Steak and Cheese Wraps:
- Meat: This recipe calls for thinly sliced or shaved ribeye steak but there are so many choices that work just as well. You can use grilled skirt steak, flank steak, strip steak, ground beef or for a short cut you can even use deli roast beef. These low carb lettuce wraps are also a great way to use leftover steak.
- Vegetables: Along with the onion and green pepper you can add mushrooms, bean sprouts, freshly diced tomatoes, black beans or any veggie you have on hand.
- Cheese: Provolone is so ooey and stringy that it’s a go-to for lettuce wraps. But any good melting cheese will work. Sharp cheddar cheese, white American cheese and Swiss make great options.
- Carb options: If you have a house divided (those that are low carb and those that aren’t) you can serve them several ways. The filling is so good in warm tortillas burrito style. You can use a low carb flour tortilla that has a lot fewer net carbs than traditional flour tortillas and no one will be able to tell the difference.
- Seasonings: Next time, add your own fun spin on these lettuce wraps just by changing up the seasoning you used in the meat mixture. Add soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce or even a little red wine vinegar for a tangy twist. If you like them a little spicy, add a little bit of red pepper flakes, or cayenne pepper to the mixture.
