Variations and Add-ins

  • Fruits: If you like your slaw to have little bites of sweetness, you can add some raisins, dried cranberries or julienned apples. You can give this tangy broccoli slaw a bit of a fall flavor by adding a tablespoon of pure maple syrup.
  • Veggies: Play around with the ingredients and add other healthy veggies to this slaw. I will sometimes add a small red onion, green onions or even cauliflower florets. Jalapeno peppers gives it a nice kick of heat.
  • Mayo: If you’re not a fan of avocado mayo, you can use Greek yogurt instead. It will make the dressing even tangier and a bit thicker.
  • Crunch: For even more texture, you can add some crunchy sunflower seeds or pine nuts. You can also add finely chopped pecans or walnuts.
  • Vinegar: We used apple cider vinegar, but you can use white or red wine vinegar instead.
  • Other add-ins: Taste the dressing before you add it to the raw broccoli slaw. If you want the dressing to have a little more of a tangy bite to it, try adding a tablespoon of Dijon mustard, a little bit of lemon juice and some lemon zest.

FAQs

How Do you Make Homemade Broccoli Slaw Mix?

broccoli and shredded red cabbage

For this recipe, we used a bag of organic prepared broccoli slaw. If you can’t find broccoli salad packaged mix in your grocery store, you can make this easy broccoli slaw recipe with just a few simple ingredients:

  • 2 heads fresh broccoli
  • 1/2 head red cabbage
  • 2-3 carrots

With a sharp knife, remove the florets from the stem from the broccoli. Trim off the tip end and any woody sections. Use a vegetable peeler remove the out thick skin. Cut them trimmed broccoli stalks into thin matchsticks. You can use a julienne peeler or a food processer if you have one. You’ll cut the carrots the same way. Shred the cabbage and add it to the bowl with the carrots and broccoli. Toss with the dressing!

You can add the florets if you prefer or save them for another meal. Add all the veggies to a large bowl and toss with the dressing.

How Long Does This Broccoli Slaw Salad Recipe Keep?

If you keep the slaw in an airtight container in the fridge, it will stay fresh for 4-5 days. This slaw is even better the next day so it’s a great side dish you can make in advance.

Should I Cook the Broccoli First?

The broccoli slaw bag you get from the grocery store is not cooked. If you’re making your own slaw mix, you can certainly blanch the broccoli first, but you will lose the crunchy texture that most people love about this recipe.
